favorite bible

Postby RevKrisis on 09 Jul 2010, 07:20

I might have asked this before but I don't remember, is there a translation of the bible you all prefer over others? Right now I'm reading the New International Version and I hear that (when it comes to the New Testament at least) it's a good translation. (Not sure about the Old Testament.) Any thoughts or suggestions for something that is user friendly but also accurate(ish)?

I like the NRSV Catholic edition - at least for the NT. There is supposed to be a new translation out soon that is supposed to take into account the oldest fragments.... but who knows.... For the Tanakh (the Jewish OT) I like the Jewish Study Bible by the Jewish Publication Society, published by Oxford. The Unvarnished NT is fun, as well.

I tend to use the New American Catholic Bible (for casual reading) and the New King James version (for Eastern liturgical functions, specifically the Orthodox Study Bible).

For more interesting study, I have a copy of the Dead Sea Scroll Bible, which is a compilation of all the Biblical texts translated only from what was found in the Dead Sea Scrolls. As far as Old Testament goes, nothing older has been found. If interested, you may buy it here: http://www.amazon.com/Dead-Sea-Scrolls-Bible-Translated/dp/0060600640/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1278694395&sr=8-1
